Alchi Monastery, unlike most Ladakhi monasteries, sits at a low, accessible elevation rather than a dramatic hilltop, and is renowned specifically for housing some of the oldest and best-preserved Buddhist wall paintings and wood carvings in the entire Himalayan region, dating back nearly a thousand years. Unusually, the monastery is no longer an active site of daily worship, which has helped preserve its extraordinarily delicate original artwork from the wear of continuous ritual use.
The complex includes several distinct temple structures, each housing different sets of murals and sculptures reflecting a blend of Kashmiri and Tibetan artistic influence, making Alchi a site of particular significance for art historians studying the early development of Himalayan Buddhist visual culture.
Believed to have been founded in the 11th century by the Tibetan translator Rinchen Zangpo, Alchi's murals reflect strong Kashmiri artistic influence from a period when that region was a major centre of Buddhist art, a connection largely severed in the centuries since.
