Introduction

Baidyanath Temple, also known as Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple, is one of the most revered Hindu temples in India, located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, making it an important pilgrimage destination for devotees across the country. The temple complex consists of the main shrine of Baba Baidyanath along with several smaller temples dedicated to various Hindu deities. Known for its spiritual significance, ancient architecture, and vibrant festivals, especially during the Shravan Mela, the temple attracts millions of pilgrims every year.

History

Baidyanath Temple has a history deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and ancient traditions. According to legend, Ravana, the king of Lanka and a great devotee of Lord Shiva, worshipped Shiva and received a Jyotirlinga from him with the condition that it should not be placed on the ground before reaching Lanka. However, through divine intervention, the lingam was placed at Deoghar, where it became established as the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga. Historical records suggest that the present temple structure was developed over several centuries, with contributions from regional rulers and devotees. The temple gained prominence as a major Shaiva pilgrimage centre and became an important part of India's religious heritage. Today, Baidyanath Temple remains one of the most sacred Shiva temples, attracting devotees who undertake the famous Kanwar Yatra to offer holy Ganga water to Lord Shiva.
