Bhojpur Temple

Bhojpur Temple, dedicated to Shiva, houses one of the largest Shiva lingams in India, over 2.3 metres tall, set within a temple that appears to have been left deliberately unfinished, its massive stone ramp still visible beside the structure, believed to have been used to haul the temple's enormous stone blocks into place. This unfinished state gives Bhojpur an unusual archaeological interest, offering rare insight into medieval Indian temple construction methods that would otherwise remain hidden beneath a completed structure.

The surrounding area also contains other archaeological remains from the same period, and Bhojpur's relatively modest visitor numbers compared to more famous Madhya Pradesh temples give it a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere for those interested in this unusual glimpse of construction-in-progress frozen in stone for nearly a thousand years.

Built under King Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty in the 11th century, the temple's construction was apparently abandoned before completion, possibly following the king's death, leaving behind unique physical evidence of the engineering techniques used to move its massive stone components.
