Bhubaneswar, Odisha's capital, is known as the 'Temple City' for its extraordinary concentration of ancient Hindu temples, with hundreds surviving from a thousand-year building tradition spanning multiple dynasties, most notably the Kalinga architectural style seen at the Lingaraj Temple. The city blends this deep temple heritage with a modern planned capital layout, having been rebuilt largely from scratch after independence.
The nearby Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, Dhauli's peace pagoda, and the city's role as gateway to the wider 'Golden Triangle' of Puri and Konark make Bhubaneswar a practical and rewarding base for exploring much of coastal and central Odisha's heritage sites.
Bhubaneswar's temple-building tradition flourished particularly under the Kalinga dynasties between the 7th and 13th centuries CE, and the modern planned city was developed after independence, designed by German architect Otto Königsberger as one of India's first fully planned post-independence capitals.
