Chanderi, a small historic town in northern Madhya Pradesh, is renowned for its handwoven Chanderi sarees, a delicate, lightweight silk-cotton blend textile tradition dating back centuries, alongside a scattering of medieval forts, tombs and mosques reflecting the town's earlier significance as a regional trading and political centre. The Kirti Durg fort and Jama Masjid are among the more significant surviving heritage structures.
Chanderi's weaving tradition remains a living craft rather than a purely historical curiosity, with numerous workshops throughout the town where visitors can watch the intricate handloom process that produces the fabric's distinctive lightweight texture and characteristic golden zari border work.
