Chilika Lake is India's largest coastal brackish water lagoon, located along the coast of Odisha and spread across the districts of Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant ecosystem, Chilika is one of India's most important wetland habitats. The lake is famous for its large population of Irrawaddy dolphins, migratory birds, and diverse aquatic life. Recognised as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, Chilika attracts nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, and travellers who visit its islands, fishing villages, and scenic locations such as Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, Kalijai Island, and Satapada.
Chilika Lake has been an important ecological and cultural centre for thousands of years. Ancient maritime traditions of Odisha, including the famous Kalinga seafaring activities, were closely connected with the coastal waters around Chilika. The lake has historically supported fishing communities and played a vital role in the livelihood and culture of local people. The region around Chilika has also been associated with ancient trade routes connecting Odisha with Southeast Asia. In modern times, growing environmental concerns led to conservation efforts, and the lake was designated as India's first Ramsar Site in 1981. The establishment of the Chilika Development Authority in 1991 helped focus on restoration, biodiversity protection, and sustainable management of the lagoon. Today, Chilika Lake remains one of India's most valuable natural ecosystems and an important symbol of Odisha's environmental heritage.
