Hampi

Hampi is an ancient heritage town located in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka and is one of India's most remarkable archaeological and cultural destinations. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi is famous for its magnificent ruins, grand temples, royal complexes, stone structures, and unique landscape of giant boulders and hills. Once the capital of the powerful Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi was among the richest and most prosperous cities in the world during the medieval period. Today, its monuments such as Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple, Lotus Mahal, and the Stone Chariot attract history lovers, architects, photographers, and travellers from across the globe.

Hampi served as the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, founded in 1336 CE by Harihara I and Bukka Raya I of the Sangama dynasty. The city flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries under rulers such as Krishnadevaraya, becoming a major centre of trade, art, architecture, religion, and culture. During its peak, Hampi was described by foreign travellers as one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world, with thriving markets and impressive monuments. The city declined after the Battle of Talikota in 1565, when the Vijayanagara forces were defeated by a coalition of Deccan Sultanates, leading to the destruction and abandonment of the capital. Rediscovered through archaeological studies, Hampi was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Today, its ruins stand as a magnificent reminder of India's medieval architectural excellence and the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire.
