INA Memorial, Moirang

The INA Memorial at Moirang marks the site where the Indian National Army, led by Subhas Chandra Bose, first raised the Indian tricolour on what was then Indian soil in April 1944, during their campaign to liberate India from British rule with Japanese military support. The memorial and adjoining museum commemorate this significant episode in India's independence movement, including artefacts and photographs documenting the INA's campaign through Manipur.

Moirang's role in this chapter of Indian history gives the small town particular significance within India's broader independence narrative, and the memorial draws visitors specifically interested in this less mainstream, Southeast Asia-linked strand of the freedom struggle, distinct from the more widely taught Gandhi-led movement.
