Lunglei, Mizoram's second-largest town, is built across a hillside terrain reflected in its name, which translates roughly to 'bridge of rock', referencing a distinctive rock formation in the area. The town serves as the commercial and administrative hub for southern Mizoram, with its churches, markets and terraced hillside layout giving it a character similar to Aizawl on a smaller scale.
Lunglei functions as the natural gateway for exploring southern Mizoram's attractions, including Phawngpui National Park and several wildlife sanctuaries further south, making it a practical overnight base for visitors continuing deeper into this part of the state. The town's own markets and churches offer a genuine, unhurried introduction to everyday southern Mizo life for those spending a night here en route further south.
Lunglei developed as an important administrative and market centre in southern Mizoram during the British colonial period, and it has remained the region's principal urban centre in the decades since, retaining its role as the natural staging point for journeys deeper into southern Mizoram.
