Amaravati is a historic town on the banks of the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh, known for its ancient Buddhist heritage, archaeological remains, and religious significance. It is particularly famous for the Amaravati Stupa, one of the most important Buddhist sites in South India, and the Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple, an important Shaiva pilgrimage centre.
Amaravati also holds modern political and administrative significance as the designated capital region of Andhra Pradesh. Surrounded by fertile agricultural landscapes and located close to Vijayawada and Guntur, the town combines ancient heritage with the evolving identity of the state’s capital region.
Amaravati has a history spanning more than two millennia. It flourished as an important centre of the Satavahana dynasty, particularly from around the 2nd century BCE onward, and became a major centre of Buddhist art, architecture and learning. The Amaravati Stupa was developed and expanded over several centuries and became renowned for its intricate limestone sculptures depicting Buddhist themes and stories.
Over the centuries, the region came under the influence of several South Indian dynasties and rulers. In the modern period, Amaravati gained renewed importance when it was selected as the proposed capital of the reorganised Andhra Pradesh in 2014, giving the historic town a new political and administrative identity.
Amaravati has a tropical climate, with hot summers, a humid monsoon season and relatively mild winters. Summer temperatures can become quite high, particularly from March to May. The southwest monsoon brings most of the area's rainfall between June and September.
Best weather: October to February, when temperatures are generally more comfortable for sightseeing and exploring the archaeological and religious attractions.
By Air: The nearest major airport is Vijayawada International Airport, approximately 35–40 km from Amaravati. Taxis and buses can be used for the onward journey.
By Train: The nearest major railway stations are Vijayawada and Guntur, both well connected to major cities across India. Amaravati can be reached from either city by road.
By Road: Amaravati is well connected by road with Vijayawada, Guntur and other towns of Andhra Pradesh. Regular buses, taxis and private vehicles are available.
