Introduction

Agatti Island is one of the most picturesque islands in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, located in the Arabian Sea off the southwestern coast of India. Surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and swaying coconut palms, Agatti is renowned for its breathtaking tropical beauty. The island is also home to Agatti Airport, the only operational airport in Lakshadweep, making it the primary gateway to the archipelago. Popular for activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, glass-bottom boat rides, and lagoon cruises, Agatti Island is a paradise for nature lovers, marine enthusiasts, and adventure seekers.

History

Agatti Island has been inhabited for centuries by communities whose lives have traditionally revolved around the sea, fishing, coconut cultivation, and maritime trade. The island's history is closely linked with the broader cultural heritage of Lakshadweep, which was influenced by ancient Arab traders, South Indian kingdoms, and later colonial powers, including the Portuguese and the British. Over time, Islam became the predominant religion on the island through peaceful trade and cultural interactions. Following India's independence, Agatti became part of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep in 1956. The opening of Agatti Airport in 1988 significantly improved connectivity, transforming the island into the main entry point for visitors and promoting tourism in the archipelago. Today, Agatti Island is celebrated for its pristine marine ecosystem, sustainable tourism, and rich island culture, making it one of India's most beautiful tropical destinations.
