Bandipur National Park, part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, is one of India's most significant tiger reserves, its dry deciduous forest home to substantial populations of tigers, elephants, leopards and gaur. Positioned along the main road between Mysuru and Ooty, the park offers relatively convenient access compared to some of India's more remote reserves, while still delivering genuine wildlife density.
Jeep safaris through the park's core zones offer the best chances of sightings, and Bandipur's position adjoining both Nagarhole and Mudumalai (in Tamil Nadu) forms part of one of South India's largest contiguous protected wildlife landscapes, significant for elephant and tiger conservation across state lines.
Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1974 under Project Tiger, building on earlier protection efforts dating to the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore's own game reserve, Bandipur has become one of South India's most important tiger conservation areas.
