Wayanad, a misty highland district in the Western Ghats bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, offers a cooler, greener alternative to Kerala's coastal destinations, its landscape combining coffee and spice plantations with dense forest and significant wildlife populations. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve connecting to Bandipur and Nagarhole across the Karnataka border, offers elephant and occasional tiger sightings, while numerous waterfalls, viewpoints and trekking trails throughout the district give visitors ample reason to spend several days exploring rather than a single quick stop.
