Bekal Fort, Kerala's largest and best-preserved fort, occupies a dramatic coastal promontory in the state's far north, its circular laterite ramparts rising directly above the Arabian Sea. Unlike many Indian forts built primarily for royal residence, Bekal was designed principally for military and observation purposes, its keyhole-shaped water bastion offering commanding views along the coastline in multiple directions.
The fort's relative remoteness from Kerala's busier southern tourist circuit has kept it comparatively uncrowded, and the surrounding Bekal Beach and nearby backwater areas have developed into a quieter alternative beach destination for visitors exploring this less-visited stretch of the Kerala coast.
Built in the 17th century, likely under the Kolathiri rajas and later expanded by Tipu Sultan and the British, Bekal Fort's strategic coastal position made it a significant military installation across several successive periods of regional control.
