Sakleshpur, in the Western Ghats between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, is known for its coffee and cardamom plantations, forested hills and a dramatic abandoned railway line running through tunnels and over bridges that has become a popular trekking route. The Green Route trek along the old Mangalore-Bengaluru railway alignment, with its series of tunnels cut through hillsides, is among the more distinctive short treks in South India.
The Manjarabad Fort, a star-shaped hilltop fortification with sweeping Western Ghats views, adds a heritage stop alongside the town's primarily nature and coffee-plantation appeal, making Sakleshpur a well-rounded stop for visitors wanting variety within a relatively compact area.
The disused railway tunnels that now form the popular Green Route trek were built during the British colonial period as part of the Mangalore-Bengaluru railway line, later realigned, leaving the original tunnels and bridges as a distinctive trekking route.
October to March, and June to September for a lush monsoon atmosphere.
About 220km from Bengaluru, roughly 5 hours by road.
