Eravikulam National Park, near Munnar, protects the largest surviving population of the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat species found only in the Western Ghats' higher elevations, alongside rolling grassland and shola forest habitat. A designated tourism zone allows visitors relatively close, easy viewing of the tahr without extensive trekking, making it one of the more accessible wildlife experiences in the Western Ghats for casual visitors.
The park is also home to the rare neelakurinji flower, which blooms in mass synchrony only once every twelve years, transforming the surrounding hillsides purple during its brief flowering period — a genuinely rare natural event that draws considerable visitor interest whenever it occurs.
Established as a national park in 1978, Eravikulam has become one of the most successful conservation stories for the Nilgiri tahr, whose population here has grown substantially under sustained protection since the park's founding.
September to March; the tourism zone may close periodically for conservation reasons.
