Idukki, both a district and the site of one of India's tallest arch dams, is known for the dramatic Idukki Dam itself — built between two natural rock formations without conventional foundation excavation — and the surrounding reservoir and forested hills. The district's broader landscape encompasses spice plantations, wildlife sanctuaries and some of Kerala's most significant hill terrain, making 'Idukki' as much a description of an entire mountainous region as a single destination.
Boat rides on the Idukki reservoir, combined with visits to the dam viewpoint, offer the area's signature experience, and the district's role as home to much of Kerala's cardamom and spice cultivation gives it an agricultural significance extending well beyond the dam itself.
The Idukki Dam, completed in 1976, remains a significant engineering achievement, built as an arch dam spanning a natural gorge between two granite hills known locally as Kuravan and Kurathi, a construction approach that avoided the need for extensive foundation work.
