Introduction

Jatayu Earth's Center, near Kollam, is built around a massive rock-cut sculpture of Jatayu, the mythical eagle from the Ramayana who attempted to rescue Sita from Ravana, said in local legend to have fallen wounded on this very hill. The sculpture, claimed as the world's largest bird sculpture, sits within a broader theme park and cultural centre exploring the Ramayana narrative through exhibits, a museum and adventure activities including zip-lining.

The combination of mythology-themed attraction, adventure park and panoramic hilltop views makes Jatayu Earth's Center a distinctly modern addition to Kerala's tourism landscape, quite different in character from the state's older temple and backwater attractions.

History

Opened in 2018, the centre was developed specifically to showcase this hill's traditional association with the Jatayu episode of the Ramayana through a combination of large-scale sculpture, museum exhibits and modern visitor infrastructure.

Best time to visit

October to March.

How to reach

About 40km from Thiruvananthapuram, roughly 1 hour by road.
