Kovalam, one of Kerala's original beach tourism destinations, is built around a series of crescent-shaped coves separated by rocky headlands, the most prominent marked by a distinctive red-and-white lighthouse offering panoramic coastal views. Long established as a favoured retreat, particularly for European visitors since the 1970s, Kovalam retains a well-developed tourism infrastructure of resorts, Ayurvedic spas and beachfront restaurants.
Ayurvedic wellness tourism is particularly prominent here, with numerous resorts offering traditional treatments alongside conventional beach holidays, giving Kovalam a slightly different character from Kerala's more purely recreational beaches further north. The three main coves — Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra — each have a somewhat distinct atmosphere, from livelier and more commercial to quieter and more secluded.
Kovalam's modern tourism development dates to the 1970s, when it became one of the first Kerala beaches to attract significant international visitor numbers, helping establish the state's broader reputation as a beach and wellness tourism destination that continues to draw repeat visitors today.
