Kalsubai Peak

Kalsubai Peak, at 1,646 metres, is the highest point in Maharashtra, its summit trek — a moderately demanding climb with several sections of iron ladders bolted into the rock — one of the most popular trekking challenges in the Sahyadri range, particularly among Mumbai and Pune's active weekend trekking community. A small temple dedicated to the local goddess Kalsubai sits at the summit, adding a devotional element to what is primarily undertaken as a physical trekking achievement.

Views from the summit, weather permitting, extend across a considerable stretch of the surrounding Sahyadri hills, and the trek's combination of accessibility from Mumbai and Pune with a genuine sense of achievement at reaching Maharashtra's highest point has made it something of a rite of passage for the region's trekking community.

The peak is named for the local goddess Kalsubai, whose small shrine at the summit has been a site of local pilgrimage for generations, predating the peak's more recent popularity as a trekking destination.

The trailhead begins near Bari village, about 165km from Mumbai, roughly 4-5 hours by road.
