Maharashtra

Maharashtra is a state in western India and is the second-most populous state in the country. Renowned for its vibrant cities, historic forts, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, scenic hill stations, pristine beaches, and thriving industries, Maharashtra is one of India's leading economic and cultural powerhouses.

The state is home to Mumbai, India's financial capital and the center of the Bollywood film industry. Maharashtra also boasts iconic attractions such as Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, the Gateway of India, numerous hill forts associated with the Maratha Empire, and beautiful destinations along the Konkan Coast.

History

1. Maharashtra has a rich history dating back to ancient times and was ruled by several powerful dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Vakatakas, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, and Yadavas.
2. During the 17th century, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj established the Maratha Empire, making Maharashtra a major political and military power in India.
3. The region later came under the control of the Peshwas before eventually becoming part of the British Bombay Presidency.
4. After India's independence, Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960 following the division of the former Bombay State into Maharashtra and Gujarat based on linguistic reorganization.
5. Today, Maharashtra is one of India's most industrialized and economically significant states.

The state covers an area of approximately 307,713 sq km, making it the third-largest state in India by area.

Its geography includes the scenic Western Ghats (Sahyadri Hills), the fertile Deccan Plateau, river valleys, forests, coastal plains, and a coastline stretching over 720 km along the Arabian Sea. Maharashtra experiences a tropical climate, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and mild winters.
