Kohima War Cemetery

Kohima War Cemetery is a historic war memorial located in Kohima, Nagaland, dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Kohima in World War II. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the cemetery is one of the most significant war memorials in India. Situated on the slopes of Garrison Hill, it features beautifully maintained terraces, stone memorials, and the famous inscription: “When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.” The cemetery stands as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance and attracts visitors from around the world.

The Kohima War Cemetery was established after the Battle of Kohima (April–June 1944), one of the fiercest battles of the Burma Campaign during World War II. The battle was fought between the Allied forces, including British and Indian troops, and the Japanese Army along with the Indian National Army (INA). The Allied victory at Kohima became a major turning point in the war against Japanese expansion in Southeast Asia. The cemetery was built on the former site of the Deputy Commissioner's tennis court, where intense fighting took place during the battle. It contains the graves of more than 1,400 Commonwealth soldiers who died during the conflict. The memorial was developed and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to honour their sacrifice. Today, Kohima War Cemetery remains an important historical landmark, preserving the memory of one of the most significant battles fought on Indian soil.
