Konark Sun Temple is a magnificent ancient temple located in Konark, Puri district of Odisha. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and is considered one of the greatest achievements of Indian temple architecture. Designed in the form of a colossal chariot of the Sun God, the temple features intricately carved stone wheels, horses, sculptures, and detailed artistic panels depicting mythology, daily life, and celestial themes. Known for its exceptional craftsmanship and architectural brilliance, Konark Sun Temple is one of India's most iconic heritage monuments and a symbol of Odisha's rich cultural legacy.
Konark Sun Temple was built in the 13th century CE around 1250 AD by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The temple was constructed as a grand tribute to the Sun God and reflected the power, prosperity, and artistic achievements of the Ganga rulers. Designed as a massive stone chariot with 12 pairs of carved wheels pulled by seven horses, it represented the journey of the Sun across the sky. The temple was built using Khondalite stone and featured highly detailed carvings created by skilled artisans of the period. Over time, the main sanctum collapsed due to structural damage, natural factors, and historical events, but many parts of the temple complex remain preserved. The temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and continues to attract visitors, historians, and architects from around the world for its extraordinary design and artistic excellence.
