Kozhikode, historically known as Calicut, was one of the most significant Arabian Sea spice-trading ports in the medieval world, famously the site of Vasco da Gama's 1498 landing that opened the direct European sea route to India. The city's old quarters retain traces of this deep trading history, alongside a distinctive Malabar culinary tradition and bustling markets that continue centuries-old commercial traditions in updated form.
The city's beach, while not a swimming destination, offers a popular evening promenade, and Kozhikode's relatively less touristy character compared to Kochi gives visitors a chance to experience a genuinely working Kerala city with deep historical roots rather than a heavily curated heritage destination.
Kozhikode's Zamorin rulers made the city one of the pre-eminent trading ports of the medieval Indian Ocean world, and Vasco da Gama's 1498 arrival here — opening the first direct sea route between Europe and India — marked a pivotal moment in global trade history.
