Maner Sharif, on the outskirts of Patna, is home to two significant Sufi shrines associated with the saints Makhdum Yahya Maneri and his teacher, drawing pilgrims from Bihar's substantial Sufi devotional tradition. The larger of the two shrine complexes, known as Bari Dargah, is an elegant example of Mughal-era architecture, with a central dome and surrounding gardens that give the site a calm, contemplative atmosphere distinct from Bihar's Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage sites.
The smaller Chhoti Dargah nearby, dedicated to an earlier saint, adds a further layer to what is one of eastern India's most significant centres of Sufi pilgrimage, particularly during the annual urs (death anniversary) commemorations that draw large crowds of devotees.
The shrines date to the medieval Sufi tradition that flourished in Bihar from the 13th century onward, with the Bari Dargah's current structure built during the Mughal period as a tribute to the saint's enduring spiritual influence in the region.
