Introduction

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park is Patna's main zoo and botanical garden, spread across a large forested area on the western edge of the city, home to tigers, lions, elephants and a range of native and exotic species alongside a significant collection of regional flora. For city residents and visiting families, it functions as Patna's primary green recreational space as much as a wildlife-viewing destination.

A toy train loops through parts of the park, and a lake with boating facilities adds to its role as a broader recreational destination, making it a popular half-day outing for Patna residents and visitors travelling with children in particular.

History

Established in the late 20th century as part of a wider effort to give Bihar's rapidly growing capital a dedicated conservation and recreation space, the park has expanded its animal collection and facilities considerably over the decades since.

Best time to visit

October to March; the park is closed on Mondays.

How to reach

In western Patna, easily reached by road or auto-rickshaw from central areas of the city.
