Mawphlang Sacred Forest

Mawphlang Sacred Forest is one of several sacred groves maintained by Khasi communities across Meghalaya, protected for centuries under traditional belief systems holding that removing anything from the forest — even a single leaf — invites misfortune from the resident deity believed to inhabit the grove. This deeply rooted taboo has preserved a stretch of genuinely undisturbed old-growth forest, its biodiversity markedly different from the surrounding managed and logged landscape outside the sacred boundary.

Guided walks led by local Khasi guides, often descendants of the forest's traditional priestly custodians, explain both the ecological significance and the cultural and spiritual traditions tied to the grove, giving visitors insight into an indigenous conservation practice that has protected this ecosystem far more effectively than most formal legal protections elsewhere.
