Shillong Peak, the highest point in the East Khasi Hills at over 1,960 metres, offers panoramic views over Shillong city and the surrounding hill terrain, its summit housing an Indian Air Force radar station alongside the public viewpoint. The peak holds religious significance for the Khasi people, considered the abode of the deity U Lei Shyllong, believed to protect the city below.
As one of the most accessible elevated viewpoints near Shillong, the peak draws both sightseeing visitors and those with a specific interest in its religious significance, and clear-day views extending across a considerable stretch of the surrounding Khasi Hills make it a worthwhile stop despite its relatively short distance from the city centre.
The peak's name derives from the Khasi deity U Lei Shyllong, believed in local tradition to watch over and protect the city of Shillong, which itself takes its name from this same guardian spirit associated with the mountain.
