Murudeshwar is home to one of the world's tallest Shiva statues, a nearly 37-metre figure standing on a hillock overlooking the Arabian Sea, visible from a considerable distance along the coastline. The temple complex beneath the statue, along with a tall gopuram (temple tower) offering an elevator ride to panoramic sea views, makes Murudeshwar as much a striking visual landmark as a pilgrimage site.
A beach at the base of the temple complex adds a further recreational dimension, and the town's relatively compact scale makes it possible to combine the temple visit with beach time and a look at the nearby Netrani Island, a popular scuba diving spot known locally as 'Pigeon Island' for its shape.
The Shiva statue, along with major expansion of the temple complex, was largely developed in the 2000s under the patronage of a local businessman, transforming what had been a smaller traditional temple into one of coastal Karnataka's most visually striking modern religious landmarks.
