Nal Sarovar is one of India's largest wetland bird sanctuaries, a shallow lake system that becomes a major wintering ground for flamingos, pelicans and numerous other migratory species each year. Traditional wooden boats ferry visitors out onto the lake for closer views of the birdlife, an especially rewarding experience during peak migration season.
The sanctuary's proximity to Ahmedabad makes it an easy day trip from the city, and while the flat, open wetland lacks the dramatic scenery of some of Gujarat's other natural attractions, the sheer density and variety of birdlife on display during winter makes it one of the state's most rewarding wildlife destinations.
Declared a bird sanctuary in 1969 and later recognised as a Ramsar wetland site of international importance, Nal Sarovar has long been one of Gujarat's most significant stopover points on the Central Asian migratory bird flyway.
