National Zoological Park

The National Zoological Park, commonly known as Delhi Zoo, sits adjacent to Purana Qila and is home to a range of Indian and international species including tigers, lions and a significant collection of birds. Its central location makes it an easy, accessible half-day outing for families visiting Delhi, particularly popular with children.

Large open enclosures rather than cramped cages give many of the animals room to move naturally, and the zoo's tree-lined pathways make for a pleasant walk regardless of how many species visitors stop to view along the way. The zoo's large, tree-shaded grounds also provide welcome relief from Delhi's summer heat, and its proximity to Purana Qila and Humayun's Tomb means it can be combined into a wider day covering both wildlife and heritage sites in South-Central Delhi.

Established in 1959, the zoo was developed on land adjacent to the historic Purana Qila fort, giving the grounds an unusual backdrop of medieval ruins visible from parts of the modern zoo layout — a rare combination of wildlife viewing and centuries-old architecture within a single visit.
