India Gate is Delhi's most recognisable war memorial, a 42-metre sandstone archway standing at the ceremonial heart of the city, inscribed with the names of over 13,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting for the British Empire in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame honouring the Unknown Soldier, burned beneath the arch for decades before being relocated in 2019 to the nearby National War Memorial.
The wide lawns surrounding India Gate are among Delhi's most popular public gathering spaces, drawing families for evening walks, ice cream vendors and boat rides on the nearby canal, especially once the sun sets and the monument is lit. Positioned at one end of the ceremonial Rajpath boulevard, India Gate also anchors many of the city's official parades and national celebrations.
Designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens as part of his broader plan for New Delhi, India Gate was completed in 1931, originally conceived to honour soldiers of undivided India who died in British imperial service.
