Omkareshwar, on an island in the Narmada river shaped, according to tradition, like the sacred Om symbol, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and a significant pilgrimage destination for devotees. The Mamleshwar and Omkareshwar temples, connected to the mainland by a bridge, form the pilgrimage's central focus, with the island's temple-covered landscape and riverside ghats giving the site a distinctly sacred atmosphere.
Boat rides around the island offer a different perspective on Omkareshwar's temple architecture from the water, and the site's relative proximity to Maheshwar further downstream makes it possible to combine both significant Narmada river pilgrimage towns within a single trip.
