Maheshwar, on the banks of the Narmada river, is closely associated with the 18th-century Holkar queen Ahilyabai Holkar, whose fort-palace and temple complex along the riverfront ghats remain the town's central heritage attraction. Maheshwar is also renowned for its handwoven Maheshwari sarees, a distinctive textile tradition Ahilyabai herself is credited with promoting, still produced by weavers in the town today.
The riverside ghats, temples and fort together create one of the more atmospheric Narmada riverfront settings in Madhya Pradesh, and Maheshwar's relatively compact, walkable scale makes it easy to combine temple visits, textile shopping and simply watching the river from the historic ghats within a single unhurried day.
Ahilyabai Holkar ruled the Holkar kingdom from Maheshwar in the late 18th century, and her extensive patronage of temples, ghats and craft traditions during this period shaped much of the town's surviving heritage and its enduring association with her memory.
