Pawapuri is a sacred pilgrimage town in the Nalanda district of Bihar and one of the holiest sites in Jainism. It is revered as the place where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara, attained Nirvana (Moksha) in 527 BCE. The town is best known for the beautiful Jal Mandir, a white marble temple situated in the middle of a serene lotus-filled lake. Surrounded by peaceful surroundings and religious monuments, Pawapuri attracts thousands of Jain pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual solace. Its historical importance and tranquil atmosphere make it one of Bihar's most cherished religious destinations.
Pawapuri holds immense historical and religious significance as the place where Lord Mahavira spent his final days and attained salvation. According to Jain tradition, after his cremation, devotees collected the sacred ashes and soil from the site in such large quantities that a large pond was formed. To commemorate this sacred event, the magnificent Jal Mandir was later built at the centre of the lake. Over the centuries, Pawapuri developed into one of the most important Jain pilgrimage centres, with temples and memorials dedicated to Lord Mahavira's life and teachings. Today, it remains a revered destination for followers of Jainism and an enduring symbol of peace, non-violence, and spiritual enlightenment.
