Pemayangtse Monastery, one of Sikkim's oldest and most significant, sits near Pelling with views toward Kanchenjunga, its name meaning 'perfect sublime lotus' reflecting its historic status as one of the premier monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim. The monastery's top floor houses an elaborate wooden sculpture depicting Guru Rinpoche's celestial abode, considered one of the finest examples of Buddhist wood carving in the region.
As one of the few monasteries in Sikkim historically permitted to ordain 'pure' monks (those of unmixed Bhutia descent), Pemayangtse held particular religious authority within the kingdom's Buddhist hierarchy, a status reflected in its continued prominence among Sikkim's monastic institutions today.
Founded in 1705 during the reign of the third Chogyal, Pemayangtse has long held a position of particular authority within Sikkimese Buddhism, historically overseeing the ordination standards for monks across several other monasteries in the kingdom.
