It is India's second-smallest state by area and is widely recognized for its clean environment, rich biodiversity, and sustainable tourism practices.

Home to the majestic Kangchenjunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sikkim is a paradise for trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and spiritual travelers. The state is famous for destinations such as Tsomgo Lake, Gurudongmar Lake, and the historic Rumtek Monastery.

History

  1. Sikkim was historically inhabited by the Lepcha people, followed by the settlement of the Bhutia and Nepali communities.
  2. In 1642, the Namgyal dynasty established the Kingdom of Sikkim, with Buddhist traditions playing a central role in the state's culture.
  3. During the 19th century, Sikkim became a British protectorate while retaining its monarchy.
  4. After India's independence, Sikkim continued as an Indian protectorate under a special arrangement.
  5. Following a public referendum, Sikkim officially became the 22nd state of India on 16 May 1975, ending the monarchy.
  6. Today, Sikkim is known for its peaceful coexistence of diverse communities, environmental conservation, and eco-friendly development.

Sikkim is located in the eastern Himalayas and shares borders with:

The state covers an area of approximately 7,096 sq km, making it one of India's smallest states.

Sikkim is characterized by rugged mountains, deep valleys, alpine meadows, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, and dense forests. It is home to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and the third-highest mountain in the world. The state experiences diverse climatic conditions ranging from subtropical valleys to alpine and snow-covered high-altitude regions.
