Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous wildlife reserve located in the Morigaon district of Assam, near Guwahati. Known as the "Mini Kaziranga," the sanctuary is renowned for having one of the highest densities of the one-horned rhinoceros in the world. Spread across grasslands, wetlands, and forests, Pobitora provides a perfect habitat for rhinoceroses, wild boars, Asiatic buffaloes, leopards, and a variety of migratory and resident birds. Its close proximity to Guwahati, scenic landscapes, and rich wildlife make it one of Assam's most popular destinations for wildlife safaris, birdwatching, and nature tourism.
The area around Pobitora has traditionally been a rich wetland ecosystem supporting diverse wildlife and local communities. It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1987 to protect the endangered one-horned rhinoceros and its natural habitat. Before receiving protected status, the region faced threats from habitat loss and human activities, which affected wildlife populations. Conservation programmes and strict protection measures helped increase the rhinoceros population and preserve the sanctuary's biodiversity. Today, Pobitora is recognised as an important conservation area in Assam and plays a significant role in protecting the state's iconic rhinoceros population while promoting eco-tourism and wildlife awareness.
