Sringeri is home to the Sharada Peetham, one of four principal monastic centres established by the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, making it one of the most important seats of Hindu monastic and philosophical tradition in South India. The Vidyashankara Temple, with its distinctive zodiac pillars and Vijayanagara-era architecture, sits alongside the matha (monastery) on the banks of the Tunga river.
As an active centre of Vedic scholarship and religious authority rather than simply a heritage site, Sringeri retains a genuinely living devotional atmosphere, with the presiding Shankaracharya continuing a monastic lineage stretching back over a thousand years, and the town's riverside setting adds a further layer of calm to what is a significant pilgrimage stop.
Adi Shankaracharya founded the Sharada Peetham here in the 8th century CE as one of four cardinal monastic centres established across India, and the unbroken lineage of Shankaracharyas presiding over the matha since then makes it one of Hinduism's most continuous institutional traditions.
