Tadoba-Andhari, Maharashtra's oldest and largest national park, is considered one of central India's most reliable tiger reserves, its dense teak and bamboo forest supporting a healthy tiger population alongside leopards, sloth bears and substantial gaur (Indian bison) numbers. The park's Tadoba Lake, around which much wildlife activity concentrates particularly in the dry season, offers some of the most consistent tiger-sighting opportunities in the reserve.
Tadoba's growing reputation among serious wildlife photographers and safari enthusiasts has made it increasingly popular in recent years, and its position in eastern Maharashtra, somewhat off the state's more conventional western tourist circuit, gives it a genuinely different regional character from the hill stations and coastal destinations more commonly associated with Maharashtra tourism.
Declared a national park in 1955 and combined with the adjoining Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary to form a tiger reserve in 1995, Tadoba-Andhari has grown into one of India's most consistently productive parks for tiger sightings among serious wildlife travellers.
