Ujjayanta Palace

Ujjayanta Palace is a magnificent royal palace located in the heart of Agartala, Tripura. Known for its grand architecture, beautiful gardens, lakes, and historical significance, the palace is one of the most important heritage landmarks in Northeast India. Built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, Ujjayanta Palace features impressive domes, tiled floors, carved doors, fountains, and expansive courtyards. Once the royal residence of the Manikya dynasty, the palace now serves as the Tripura State Museum, showcasing the art, culture, history, and traditions of Tripura and the Northeast region.

Ujjayanta Palace was built in the late 19th century by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the ruler of the Manikya dynasty of Tripura. Construction began in 1899 and was completed in 1901. The palace was designed by British architect Sir Alexander Martin and reflected a combination of Mughal, European, and traditional Indian architectural styles. It was named "Ujjayanta Palace" by Rabindranath Tagore, who had a close relationship with the royal family of Tripura. The palace served as the official residence of the Tripura kings until the merger of the princely state with India in 1949. Later, it became an important administrative building and was eventually converted into the Tripura State Museum in 2013. Today, Ujjayanta Palace stands as a symbol of Tripura's royal heritage, cultural identity, and architectural excellence.
