Vaishali

Vaishali is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and an important historical and spiritual destination in the Indian state of Bihar. Located about 60 kilometres from Patna, it was the capital of the ancient Licchavi Republic, considered one of the world's earliest known republics. Vaishali holds immense religious significance for both Buddhists and Jains. It is believed to be the place where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara, was born, and where Lord Buddha visited several times, delivered his last sermon, and announced his approaching Mahaparinirvana. The city is home to ancient stupas, the Ashokan Pillar, monasteries, archaeological remains, and sacred sites that attract pilgrims, historians, and travellers from around the world.

Vaishali flourished between the 6th and 5th centuries BCE as the capital of the powerful Licchavi Republic, making it one of the earliest examples of a democratic form of governance. The city became a major centre of trade, culture, and religion in ancient India. According to Buddhist tradition, Lord Buddha visited Vaishali multiple times and delivered his final sermon here before leaving for Kushinagar. After his Mahaparinirvana, one of the eight portions of his sacred relics was enshrined in Vaishali. The city is also the birthplace of Lord Mahavira, who spent many years preaching Jain philosophy in the region. During the reign of Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, an Ashokan Pillar and several Buddhist monuments were erected, many of which still stand today. Archaeological excavations have uncovered stupas, monasteries, ancient fortifications, and relics, preserving Vaishali's legacy as one of India's most significant historical and religious centres.
