Yanam, a small coastal enclave surrounded by Andhra Pradesh, is another of the former French colonial territories that together make up the union territory of Puducherry, its geographic separation from the main Puducherry town giving it a distinct, somewhat overlooked character within the wider union territory. The town retains some French colonial-era architecture and a small memorial to its former colonial administration, alongside its position on the Godavari river delta.
Given its remoteness from Puducherry proper, Yanam receives relatively few visitors compared to the main town, appealing specifically to those curious about the full geographic scope of the former French Indian territories rather than conventional tourists following a standard Puducherry itinerary.
