Durga Puja is one of the grandest Hindu festivals, especially celebrated in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand. The festival honors Goddess Durga and celebrates her victory over the powerful demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and divine power over destructive forces. According to Hindu tradition, the gods combined their divine energies to create Goddess Durga, who fought Mahishasura and ultimately defeated him. During the festival, beautifully crafted idols of Durga are installed in elaborately decorated pandals, where devotees gather for prayers, cultural programs and community celebrations. Durga is traditionally depicted with ten arms, carrying various weapons and riding a lion or tiger, while defeating Mahishasura. The final days are filled with devotional ceremonies, music, traditional food and large processions. On Vijaya Dashami, the idols are carried in processions and immersed in rivers or other bodies of water, symbolizing Durga's return to her divine abode. Beyond its religious importance, Durga Puja has become a major celebration of art, architecture, music, food, fashion and Bengali cultural identity.
