Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Prakash, is one of the most important Sikh festivals and commemorates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru and founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan. The festival celebrates his teachings of one universal God, equality, compassion, honest living, humility and service to humanity. Celebrations usually begin with Akhand Path, a continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, followed by Nagar Kirtan processions featuring devotional singing, traditional music and religious displays. On the main day, devotees gather at gurdwaras for prayers, Kirtan, religious discourses and the distribution of Karah Prasad. A central feature is Langar, the free community meal where people of every background sit together and eat, reflecting Guru Nanak's teachings of equality and selfless service. Homes and gurdwaras are illuminated and decorated, while devotees spend the day in prayer, reflection and community service.
