Agrasen ki Baoli is a striking stepwell hidden in the middle of Delhi's busy Connaught Place commercial district, its 108 stone steps descending steeply between high, narrow walls into a cool, shadowed depth. The dramatic contrast between the baoli's silent stone interior and the traffic-filled streets just outside makes it one of Delhi's most atmospheric hidden heritage spots.
Once used as a water source and a cool retreat from Delhi's summer heat, the well has long since dried up, but its architectural drama remains fully intact, drawing photographers, history enthusiasts and increasingly, given its social media popularity, curious walk-in visitors discovering it by chance.
The stepwell's exact age is debated, with some attributing its original construction to the legendary King Agrasen, though the surviving structure is generally dated to the 14th century, rebuilt by the Agrawal community who trace their ancestry to the king.
October to March, or any season since much of the well is shaded and cool.
