Connaught Place is New Delhi's principal commercial and business district, a grand colonial-era circular arcade of white-columned Georgian-style buildings arranged around a central park. Built as the retail and social heart of British-planned New Delhi, it remains one of the city's busiest hubs, home to shops, restaurants, cinemas and offices ringed around the distinctive circular layout.
The central park provides a welcome green break from the surrounding shopping arcades, and the area's mix of international retail chains alongside older, established Delhi institutions gives it a character distinct from the city's more traditional bazaars like Chandni Chowk. As a major metro interchange, Connaught Place also functions as a natural starting point for exploring much of central Delhi.
Designed in the 1920s as part of Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker's broader plan for New Delhi and named after the Duke of Connaught, the area was intended from the outset as the commercial centrepiece of the new colonial capital.
October to March, though the area functions year-round as a commercial and business hub.
Rajiv Chowk metro station, a major interchange on the Yellow and Blue lines, sits directly beneath Connaught Place.
