Ajanta Caves

Ajanta Caves are a magnificent group of ancient rock-cut caves located in the Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) district of Maharashtra. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the caves are famous for their stunning Buddhist paintings, sculptures, and architectural excellence. Carved into a horseshoe-shaped cliff along the Waghora River, Ajanta consists of 30 rock-cut caves that served as Buddhist monasteries and prayer halls. The caves are renowned for their detailed murals depicting scenes from the life of Lord Buddha, Jataka tales, and ancient Indian society, making them one of the greatest achievements of Indian art and architecture.

The Ajanta Caves were developed in two major phases, beginning around the 2nd century BCE during the Satavahana period and later flourishing between the 5th and 6th centuries CE under the patronage of the Vakataka dynasty, especially during the reign of King Harishena. The caves served as centres of Buddhist learning, meditation, and religious activities for monks. The later caves are especially famous for their exceptional paintings and sculptures, which represent the high artistic achievements of ancient India. After the decline of Buddhism in the region, the caves were gradually abandoned and became hidden by forests for centuries. They were rediscovered in 1819 by British officer John Smith during a hunting expedition. Ajanta was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and remains one of the world's finest examples of ancient Buddhist art and rock-cut architecture.
