Introduction

Alleppey Backwaters, also known as Alappuzha Backwaters, are one of the most famous natural attractions in Kerala. Known as the "Venice of the East," Alappuzha is famous for its interconnected network of lakes, canals, lagoons, and rivers surrounded by lush greenery, coconut palms, and traditional villages. The backwaters offer a unique travel experience through houseboat cruises, allowing visitors to explore Kerala's scenic landscapes, local culture, and traditional way of life. The region is also known for its paddy fields, fishing communities, coir industry, and vibrant festivals, making it one of India's most popular tourism destinations.

History

The history of Alleppey Backwaters is closely connected with Kerala's traditional waterways, trade, and agriculture. For centuries, the backwaters served as important transportation routes for local communities and played a major role in the trade of spices, rice, and other goods. The modern town of Alappuzha was developed in the 18th century by Raja Kesavadas, the Diwan of Travancore, who built canals and waterways to improve trade and connectivity. The region later became a major centre for the coir industry, with coconut fibre products being exported worldwide. Traditional Kettuvallams (cargo boats) that once transported goods were later transformed into tourist houseboats, creating a unique tourism experience. Today, Alleppey Backwaters represent Kerala's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and centuries-old relationship between people and waterways.
