Introduction

Kumarakom, on the shores of Vembanad Lake, is one of Kerala's premier backwater destinations, its bird sanctuary, houseboat cruises and luxury resort scene giving it a somewhat more upscale character than the busier houseboat hub of Alleppey. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, spread across mangrove forest along the lake's edge, draws both resident and migratory waterbirds, particularly during winter months.

Traditional Kerala houseboats (kettuvallams) based in Kumarakom offer overnight or day cruises through the surrounding backwaters, and the area's relatively quieter, more spread-out resort development compared to Alleppey has made it a favoured choice for visitors seeking a calmer backwater experience.

History

Kumarakom's development as a distinct backwater tourism destination, somewhat separate from the more established Alleppey circuit, grew significantly from the 1990s onward as Kerala's tourism industry diversified across the wider Vembanad Lake region.

Best time to visit

November to February, for the best weather and bird sanctuary activity.

How to reach
